Methodology
How we check
What we publish, where it comes from, and what we leave out.
Sources first
Each falls guide starts with the managing agency's own pages, such as the White Mountain National Forest or NH State Parks. Names and mapped locations come from the USGS Geographic Names Information System. We use Wikipedia only for history or published heights, and we cite it when we do.
What we won't claim without a source
- That swimming is allowed
- That a walk is easy
- That a site is open
- That a trail or viewpoint is accessible
- A height, trail length, fee or season
When no source covers one of these, the page says Not verified. We don't publish ratings, reviews, hours or prices we can't source.
Last checked dates
Every guide shows the date we last checked its sources. Rules, fees and closures can change after that date, so confirm with the agency before you go.
Maps and directions
A mapped falls location is not a trailhead. We give directions only to parking areas an agency lists, and never across private land. Distances between falls are straight-line distances.
Photos
We use only photos of the actual falls with a free license (Creative Commons or public domain) from Wikimedia Commons, credited on the page with a license link. We resize them for speed. Where no suitable photo exists, we use an illustration instead, never a stock photo presented as a specific falls.
Independence
SplashTrail has no ads, sponsors or affiliate links.
Corrections
If something is wrong or out of date, please tell the managing agency and send us a correction. We review every message.
