Waterfall safety and etiquette
Last checked 2026-11-01 ยท How we check
Stay safe
- Wet rock near falls is very slippery, even when it looks dry. The Forest Service warns the rocks at Lower Falls "can be quite slippery."
- Stay off the tops of falls and back from edges.
- High water after rain or snowmelt makes pools and crossings dangerous. Turn back at a deep or fast crossing.
- Tell someone your plan, carry a light and check the weather.
Follow the posted rules
- Swimming or jumping into Rocky Gorge is prohibited and strictly enforced.
- Swimming is not allowed at Sabbaday Falls.
- Alcohol is prohibited at Lower Falls by town ordinance.
- Don't park along the road at Diana's Baths; the Forest Service prohibits it for safety.
- Pets must be leashed in Crawford Notch State Park, home to Arethusa Falls and Ripley Falls.
- Pay the posted fee at fee sites.
Leave it better
- Pack out everything you bring. Stay on the trail and off fragile banks.
- Don't cross private land to reach a falls. Many of the falls on our full list have no confirmed public access.
- Learn more from Leave No Trace's seven principles.
